3 Tips for Handling Moisture Behind Your Stucco

For homeowners, stucco siding is a popular and stylish choice. However, one significant issue that homeowners face with stucco siding is moisture buildup behind it. Unfortunately, moisture leads to severe problems like mold and rot, which can damage the structure of the home. This is a common thing Residential Inspector of America sees with stucco inspections, but thankfully, there are things you can do to handle moisture behind your stucco.

1. Regular Inspection

The first step in handling moisture behind your stucco siding is to get it regularly inspected. We'll inspect your stucco siding during dry weather and take a closer look at areas that may be prone to moisture accumulation, such as around windows, doors, and other joints. We look for any discoloration or staining on the surface, soft spots, and cracks or holes. These are all indicators of water damage or the presence of standing water that need immediate attention.

2. Seal Any Gaps

One way moisture can get behind your stucco siding is through gaps in the joint sealant. Cracks in the stucco or loosening sealant can allow water to penetrate the stucco barrier and seep into the interior walls. To prevent this, you need to seal any gaps with an appropriate sealant. Before applying the sealant, you need to clear out any debris or dirt that has accumulated on the surface. A clean surface will ensure the sealant adheres correctly.

3. Proper Drainage

Another tip to prevent moisture buildup behind stucco siding is to ensure proper drainage around your home's foundation. If your home's foundation is not sloped away from the house or if your gutters and downspouts don't work correctly, water can accumulate at the base and seep into your stucco siding. To prevent this, ensure your downspouts and gutters are cleaned out regularly, slope your landscape away from the house, and install a French drain or other drainage system to direct the water from the house foundation.

Maintain the Look of Your Stucco

Treating moisture buildup behind stucco siding may seem daunting, but by following these three tips, you can maintain your stucco siding's appearance and prolong its lifespan.
